A good Whodunnit with high literary value, good characters

A small-town lawyer's midlife crisis is sparked by the discovery of the dead body of his overbearing father. Although told in the first person, the tale gives good background and many interesting stories about other characters. In his search for his father's killer, the narrator uncovers a lot of dirt, human suffering, and neglect in his small town, all while trying to juggle his own affairs and keep himself out of jail as the prime suspect. Our first-person narrator has a good literary style while not sounding too cute about it (unlike some other famous authors' attempts at first-person writing).

It would seem very difficult to write a good first-person thriller, giving the reader all of the necessary clues to solve the case while still making us go "D'oh, I should have known!" at the end. Kudos to the author for pulling it off.

Couldn't put the book down

After recently discovering John Hart, I have now read 4 of his books and love them all! I have also recommended him as an author to many friends ... And all this in less than 2 or 3 month! I don't usually like mystery/thrillers, but Hart's writing continues to take me to places I had not previously enjoyed. The cliche, "couldn't put the book down" applies to each & every one of his books read thus far including King of Lies!

Becoming a favorite

Beautifully written. The characters are complex and interesting - and flawed, each in a unique way. The plot is complex enough without becoming too convoluted. The mystery kept me guessing and I totally missed my guess. I somehow missed this one until the interview with Hart at the close of Redemption Road. I thought I had read all this books. I won't miss the next one. A great Southern writer.

In 1943, Douglas and her husband gave up a suburban lifestyle to help her in-laws avoid the loss of the family farm. Written 50 years later, her account captures a time when farming was in transition: the house had no indoor plumbing, and women spent most of their time preparing food for numerous hired hands. Yet the farmers were beginning to use scientific husbandry and market analysis, and the acquisition of a first combine presaged the coming decline in manual labor. What was planned as a stay of a year or two grew to be nearly two decades, and Douglas describes both the gradual building of community ties and the tasks and trials of farm life. She arrived with no illusions of a rural Eden and had to adjust to grinding physical labor and stand up to an autocratic father-in-law. Douglas's "warts-and-all" account reveals that some neighbors rustled livestock and cheated one another. A valuable addition to regional collections or where interest in farm life is high.

Tears of frustration and loneliness more than once filled the eyes of Marjorie Myers Douglas as she valiantly coped with her new status as a farmwife. Life on a western Minnesota stock ranch in the years during and after World War II was, after all, a far cry from growing up in her parents' Minneapolis home community of academics and her years as a medical social worker in New York City and St. Paul. It all began in 1943 as a two-year plan to help Don's ill father avoid losing the 1,200-acre farm. With World War II pulling able-bodied men into the military, it was nearly impossible to find good farmhands, and Don felt an obligation to contribute to his father's physical and economic recovery from a severe heart attack. Leaving their modern suburban house behind, Marjorie, Don, and baby Anne moved their worldly goods to the simple farmhouse some three miles from the little town of Appleton. For Marjorie it was more a challenge than just a change - a challenge that stretched far beyond the two years into seventeen! A long, weary, happy, sad life

Marjorie Myers never guessed she'd be spending the next 17 years of her life on an out of the way farm way the heck out in Western Minnesota; she'd been happy and content living the urban lifetsyle of busy, bustling St. Paul. But then she fell in love and got married, in the middle of World War II, and the next thing you know she was living among her in-laws, a mixed blessing at best. This is her memoir of her years in what amounted to another country for her, a time when she learned a lot about a simpler life and a more arduous one as well. For if America changed a lot between 1943 and the beginning of the "New Frontier," it never changed as much as for people living on stock ranches like Marjorie. She never thought she'd be killing animals, much less ones she had gotten to love as pets and friends, but the hard way of the farm got her used to it. At bottom she remained the same endearing, enchanting woman she had started out with, and you know what?

She came out of her experience a whole lot smarter and with more of a natuve wisdom about the way things work, not only on the farm but in the secret chambers of the human heart. If you like Mary Gaskell's novels of 19th century farm life, you will enjoy this true account, s beautifully written, of one'woman's farm wife experience, and you will grow to love her husband, "Don," and understand why a man like that could make a woman leave her former home and follow him even unto a farm not much removed from the famous COLD COMFORT FARM. Highly recommended for both city and country folk.

Awesome!

I absolutely loved this book. I'm a city girl who at the time I read this book had been transplanted to a hobby farm in Kansas. I always recommend this book to any "newcomers" to the country. I was sad to see the book end! Definitely a must read!

Down On the Farm

A well written book by a woman who, having been raised in the city, was not sure she wanted to be a farmer's wife. However, she fell right to work, trying her best to be just that. And for the most part she succeeded. I found it amusing that she worried so that her children, by living on a farm, would not be exposed to enough culture to grow up to be well rounded adults. I guess we farm-raised country folk just never realize how uncultured we are. Oh well, as they say, ignorance is bliss.

Amazingly current for a book written 35-40 years ago!

it was amazing how a book written so many years ago (late70's - early 80"s) was so on target given our current political climate - first female president, gun control legislation, etc. Incredibly prescient! It is the third book in the Kane and Abel series and it is certainly a good idea to read all three in order but this one can stands on its own - you just don't have as much background information about some really interesting characters. It is gripping and surprising. Jeffrey Archer is a wonderful writer.

The Title Gives Away the Story.

First I read Cain and Able and the Prodigal Daughter, and the entire series was wonderful as are most of Jeffrey Archer's books. However, Shall We Tell the President was entirely different. I wanted to continue with the families but it was all about the FBI. It was not as exciting as I would have wished. However, I am not saying it is not worth reading. It was not as interesting as I would expect from Jeffrey Archer.

A variation on the theme, but a little too predictable this time.

The story was a good one, even if it didn't feature the Kane family as the central characters. For me, the story didn't quite move fast enough for a tale that spanned only a little more than a week, and there were key plots of the main plot I had figured out by about halfway through. Not Mr. Archer's best, in my opinion.

To difficult to understand

Dr. Leaf Speaks far too fast. That coupled with her accent makes it extremely difficult to understand. Much of the material in the book is too complicated for the average person who simply wants to apply the material. The subject is good and the material needs to be presented in such a way that anyone can understand the concepts and learn to apply them. Hopefully someone will make that happen.

Everything A Romance Should Be

This book is EVERYTHING a romance should be. The research done was enormous and while the plot was simple and straightforward, the characters were not. They drew me with the quick repartees. And resolutions were not always as simple. Unlike several other romances, the way Conor and Laurel worked through their problems was much more realistic and the end was oh so very satisfying. This book starts on page one and keeps you reading until the very end with great dialogue, wonderful love scenes and excellent writing. I cannot wait to learn about the rest of his brothers.

5 Stars but I'd give it higher if I could

I am surprised by the review that states that a couple that meet and are attracted to each other can't have an instant feeling of "He's Mine!" | "She's Mine" without getting to know [all] about each other. I can think of three great marriages in my family where the couple met and just KNEW that was the right one. There was a decision "S/He's mine" ... It can happen and it still does happen.

I look for the following in a romance -- good love story. A hero that I'd like to think would rescue me if I was "the beautiful girl". The girl has to be interesting and not silly, giggles and makes dumb content. Too many love stories have the great, bright man who is a leader who supposedly falls for an airhead. And she can't be a pushover who does the "anything you say dear" routine either. Add in some adventure and you've got a good start to a enjoyable read.

This author captures everything I like and then some. The scenery described -- what the keep was like. She does her research and it shows. You ever look at her web site? Tons of research links on it. And there are more books planned -- one for each of the brothers. I can't wait to read them. For a debut novel, this is wonderful.

The patterns are beautiful but the stockings are huge

The patterns are beautiful but the stockings are huge. A typical Christmas stocking is about 17" long, I'm a tight knitter, and these stockings are about 25" long. The child I made it for could fit inside the stocking. I wish I could find these patterns in a regular size.
