Great leads but their story is a little slow going, 3.5 stars

I have never read the prequel to Desiring the Highlander so I had no preconceptions about characters or plot lines. It wasn't hard to figure out which characters were from the previous novel as they do make appearances in this one. However, this book stands alone and can easily be understood without the backdrop of the previous novel. The plot is one that has been done before, angry woman finds love en route to somewhere she does not want to go, but it has some distinctions too, mainly that the heroine wises up to her circumstances and makes the best of her situation.

Hero Cole McTiernay hates the English passionately. However, when his half English sister-in-law sends him to fetch her childhood friend in England, he heads south to find her albeit reluctantly. What he discovers is a wild looking, hostile, unbathed woman. He puts her on his horse against her wishes and hightails it back to Scotland.

Heroine Ellenor is furious. She had plans to escape to a nunnery and now this big Scot is ruining everything. For the first couple of days the hero and heroine play a game of one upmanship with each other. She's feisty and he's a wonderful strategist. They quickly begin to admire the other's insights and pretty much enjoy each other's company. Ellenor decides to cooperate with Cole and his men and soon she is beloved by everyone, including Cole.

Cole though is fighting his feelings for Ellenor because he just wants to hate the English so much because of their past misdeeds. His anger and resentment never were directed at Ellenor so I did not feel much tension from his internal struggles. He was always respectful and considerate of her sensibilities.

Ellenor is the more interesting character, mostly because she communicates her feelings with others, and not only Cole. She is a friendly sort and just a little bit bossy, like Cole. She is pretty smart, with a good sense of humor, and everyone just loves her.

The characters are charming, not just the leads but also secondary ones too. The tension though was lacking and the story was a little long. The middle portion particularly was slow going. The leads have a passionate romance but it wasn't overly exciting, perhaps it was because they were a little too much alike; they certainly thought alike and this was apparent very early into the novel. They second guessed each others moves often. There is an outer tension and conflict as opposed to internal struggles between the leads that comes late into the story. Overall this gets 3 ½ stars. The leads were likeable but their story never kept me up at night turning pages.

Loved it! Can't wait for the next one in the Series

I was contacted my Michele Sinclair to read and review her latest and book 3 in the Scottish Highlander Series Desiring a Highlander which is set to release Dec 01 from Kensington. This past year I have become a huge Highlander and Historical Romance fiend if you will. A newer genre for me and I have must admit I am loving every moment. Sinclair takes us on a very sensual romp back to the 14th Century Scottish Highlands with the 3rd installment of her McTiernay brothers, Cole. Oh such a handsome, strong and fiercely sexual man, Cole brings along with him a presence of power and undying loyalty. Which is a problem as well as a virtue for the young McTiernay. Stubborn to the bone in his loathing of the English not only for the brutal death of his best friend Rob, but from years of war and suffering, Cole has a pretty clear disgust for the English. So it was with a little chuckle that he is swindled by his sister in law to pick up Ellenor Howell. Who is VERY English and VERY proud of it. Ellenor has her own baggage and carries it heavy in her heart. Ellenor's sister and brother in law have tried relentlessly to marry her off and be rid of her but to no avail..... until Cole. He journey's back to Scotland with her and the fun begins. I couldn't help laugh out loud with a sly smile on how many times and the ways that Ellenor tries to escape her captor Cole. His frustrations are evident and comical as he tries desperately to hate the woman but can't help falling for her instead. Ellenor as well is uneasy with her attraction to the brute, and the sassy women won't make life easy on him. No matter how much he wants to hate Ellenor Cole can't and their love for each other is delicious. Problem is that Cole is vowed to hate everything English which would include feisty Ellenor. Oh the troubles that ensue, as Cole is in the running of sorts for the position of Laird in Northern Scotland. He has the men and the leadership but Cole isn't what you would call a people person. Unfortunately for him his competitor is loved by the people, small army, but a really good man. What a Laird needs to be is not only respected by their people but strong and powerful enough to protect them. The end result kind of surprised me, but in fact made perfect sense as well. I find it hard not to include spoilers if I tell you more, but what made this books so wonderful besides the love story was the inner struggle for Cole and with Ellenore. Will love conquer all, will Cole get the revenge for his friend and so many Scottish deaths ? hummm... I could tell you, but I won't!
Through the pages of beautiful imagery, it is evident that Sinclair has done her research of not only historical facts but of the life of the Scottish people creating characters with an abundance of depth and personality that captures the reader and transports them back into the 14th Century. A trip I was hard-pressed to end as I read the last words of this beautiful and intriguing story of two lovers who never should have been, two hearts that wouldn't give in to circumstance or hate, who found each other through fate, who's love is undying. Not having read the first two books, The Highlander's Bride & To Wed A Highlander I found little confusion and was able to read Desiring a Highlander as a stand alone. But loving this one so much that I am determined to go back and read the first two! As I LOVE a series, Michele plans on a book for each and every brother, check her site out to see what is up and coming in the Scottish Highlander Series. Such a great author!!

This is the third Highlander book in this series and I honestly can't tell which book I like the best. So many times I find a good book but when I read other books by the same author they are hit or miss. Since this series is going to have at least seven books, I keep wondering if they will start sounding repetitive. So far each book is unique and the characters are so well developed. The thing I love most about Sinclair's books is that she spends more time on the relationship between the hero and heroine than on the generic plot twists you seen in all other historical romance books. The only negative thing I can say is that the ending of this book seemed a bit rushed. Otherwise, I can't wait for the next brother's book. I am hoping it is Conan's book because he seems like a very interesting story. I am also hoping for more interaction between the brothers because those are the funniest parts in the Highland Bride.

Worth the price if you don't mind an e-book that has no chapter breaks

One of my favorite satire books and by my favorite author Gore Vidal . However whoever constructed this e-book really did a poor job at it I would rather pay you know around two or three times as much I paid for this which was 360 so meaning I would pay $10 for a better constructed e-book that was section and had chapters in section breaks like a regular e-book does instead of having it be written as one big long file with no page breaks no nothing as this e-book. And when I bought this I also thought because it was listed with the Mira Beckenridge/Myron this would be too since it was listed as that and it wasn't.

Cheap Sensationalism.

If you are interested in reading some of Gore Vidal's works, I would recommend BURR or LINCOLN instead. Myra Breckenridge is just a mess. Maybe this is some sort of transgender novel of liberation for some, but I think it is really more of a bad acid trip combined with cheap exploitation. By all means, do not see the movie based on the book, which Vidal even said was horrific. There is a reason this book is 99 cents on Amazon and Burr is $10.99.

50 years ago he was the most famous author in the world and this book proves why. Way before its time and absolutely breath taking to read even from a modern perspective. Young gay men and intellectuals in general should read all of his works. Its sad Ayn Rand is the only antique author anyone remembers in these times

A man and his dragon

Imagine if the Napoleonic wars had been fought using an air force... of dragons.

That idea is the root of Naomi Novik's Temeraire series -- an alternate-history fantasy that explores the idea of a Horatio Hornbloweresque navy officer who suddenly finds a dragon uprooting his life. And in the first three books of her series, compiled in "In the Service of the King," Novik stretches credibility here and there, but her stories are a solid, intelligent, often amusing adventure story.

"His Majesty's Dragon" enters the scene when Captain William Laurence's Reliant captures a French ship -- which turns out to have a dragon egg in its hold. And when the baby dragon hatches, it decides it wants Laurence and no other to be its rider. But accepting the dragon (now named Temeraire) means giving up his Navy commission and joining the Air Corps -- especially since Temeraire violently rejects the idea of accepting another rider. Both rider and dragon have a lot of learning to do. But as the bond between them grows and Temeraire grows rapidly to maturity, the Napoleonic Wars are raging -- and Temeraire's true power hasn't yet been shown.

And in "Throne of Jade," an ill-tempered Chinese prince demands that Temeraire be returned to the Imperial family. Temeraire and Laurence are having none of that -- and when they can't tempt away Temeraire, both dragon and rider are sent to China, along with the prince and his entourage. But the journey is full of storms and assassinations, and China turns out to be no less dangerous as Laurence learns of plot around Temeraire.

Having returned from China, Laurence and Temeraire don't even get to go home before being thrown into "Black Powder War." They're sent straight to Istanbul to pick up three dragon eggs sold to England by the Ottoman Empire -- only to deal with deal with wild dragons (who alone make the book worth reading) a treacherous Sultan, and the vengeful albino Celestial Lien.

Then there's a special short story unique to this omnibus -- the story of Lien's first weeks among Napoleon's forces, and her haughty disgust with everything about it (including the less refined European dragons, whom the generals want her to breed with). But she's determined to stick it out, so she can revenge herself for her prince.

The Temeraire series is what Christopher Paolini's books SHOULD have been -- a richly-drawn, intelligent series about the bond between a young man and his dragon. Novik still has some rough spots in her first three books ("His Majesty's Dragon" is rather short on plot, "Black Powder War" short on characterization) but they are undeniably fascinating meshes of what 19th century war would have been like if there had been dragons.

She conjures up a pretty fascinating world, giving dragons different breeds, quirks, biological features (they blast acid, fire, even sonic waves), and relationships with their riders (one poor little dragon whose rider treats him like a disposable vehicle). There's even some delving into dragon rights -- are the dragons being treated like slaves?

And despite long stretches of traveling over land and sea (often for months), Novik keeps it interesting with lush, detailed writing and some truly thrilling aerial battles aboard the vast dragons. On land, there's plenty of gentle comic relief ("I am afraid that some of them go there to drink, and keep low company." "Oh, you mean whores!") and lots of messy eating.

Temeraire and Laurence are a study in contrasts. The human is mannered, thoughtful and very tied to society's mores, while the dragon has a child's enthusiasm, curiosity, honesty and stubbornness (and frankly he's an adorable little dragon). There's also a colorful collection of supporting characters -- fellow Corps dragons Lily and Maximus, the malignant Prince Yongxhing, the mysterious Tharkay, and many others.

"In the Service of the King" is a solid trio of alternate history stories, with plenty of adventure, humour and a lot of lovable dragons. Definitely worth flying with.

I have read and loved the entire series, it has it all. Napoleon is brought to life, the horror he brought to the world is presented accurately. The science of dragon husbandry is fascinating as is getting to know the dragons as individuals. Their psychology and emotions are fascinating. Ms. Novick has a style that brings battlefields, throne rooms, and camp fire discussions to life, making the reader part of the story.

Highly Recommended for all Ministers

I have personally used and highly recommend the Star Book for Ministers. Filled with useful forms, ceremonial procedures, guidelines for different types of services, parliamentary guides for churches, and even ecclesiastical sample letters and blanks, I have found it a priceless resource. I highly recommend this book for all ministers, and especially for the newly ordained clergy or anyone starting a church.

The Star Book for Ministers is a wonderful reference guide. It is jam packed with information yet small enough to discreetly and easily carry with you. If you are new to the ministry or someone who has been in the ministry a while, it contains practical helps and information.
Topics covered include: Entering the Christian Ministry, Preaching the Gospel, Pastoral Care, etc. There are almost 100 pages of scripture one can refer to by topic (Confession & Forgiveness, Christian Love, Grief, Comfort, Beneditions, etc). This is most helpful when counseling someone.
Finally there are practical guidelines for dealing with others during weddings, funerals and baptisms as well as suggestions for ceremonies. Indispensible!

If only the heroine would throw a punch ...

My complaint about this book is solely in the main character.

And let me add, I love this author. I love her other books. I've read everything she's written thus far, and pre-ordered her upcoming books. Can't get enough of her.

Oh, but this book ... grates on my nerves. Makes my teeth itch. Seriously irks me. And I love a dominant man story. But this guy. Everytime he speaks, a voice in my head grows louder through the book, shrieking, "Punch him in the head, punch him in the head, punch him in the head!"

I cannot reconcile him as a hero. The way he treats the heroine, his attitude toward her, all of it. I'm not against some BDSM in a story, in the bedroom, if it's between consenting adults. Treating the heroine like a bad dog who is supposed to obey as they wander through Disney land, as she visits with a friend at a wedding, as she goes on a date with another man? Nope. I'm not against some serious alpha male. Questionable consent, using his size and strength against her? Nope. Not a hero. Not this guy.

Not that those things can't work in a story, if it's set up that way. But in this author's world, it's really not. And since the hero is the sheriff of this small town, he should probably know better than to be doing what he's doing. A good punch in the face would be an excellent place to start his education, in my opinion.

If the bad guy had won, taken the girl and run off into the sunset, at the end, I would have given this review five stars, just because I hated the hero that much.

So, just to wrap up my angst against this book, I really don't recommend it. But try DMB's other books. They are well written, with great stories and characters that you'll be eager to see more of. These characters from this hideous story actually appear in other stories, and they don't annoy in those.

Hated, hated, hated this story!

Gabe wasn't a dominant, he was just a jerk. Seriously, folks, this man/cat doesn't have enough will or juice to tell his new boss where to stuff it, but he has enough to dominate Sarah? There is a word for those who can't stand up for themselves in their professional lives and so come home to stomp all over those at home, and that word IS NOT "romantic" or "charming" or even "desirable."

His domination was supposed to be all for her pleasure, but where is his consideration for her pleasure, her heart, her feelings, her peace of mind, ANY OTHER TIME?!? He was going to make this decision, but he didn't even really consult Sarah. While he is gone, he sounds off over the limited communication time he has to another woman. He comes back and expects her to fall into his arms in a very, "where's my supper, wench," sort of way. He gets jealous, but doesn't understand that she might be have feelings, too, like, say, jealousy over the other woman he has talked to more than he talked to her. Disregards her in decision-making, controlling, displays a complete lack of understanding of her feelings...hmm, still not spelling "good husband material" to me.

Warning lights are flashing everywhere for me, but, as usual for paranormal fiction, the "destined mate" card trumps all, so we are supposed to buy their HEA? Not me! I am sensing nothing but a restraining order, and since he is the sheriff, Sarah might be fleeing to Petal, Georgia and the arms of one of Lauren Dane's Chase brothers. She'd be a lot safer. If I could give this negative stars, I would.

Plot:
Now that Gabe has returned to town, Sarah needs to decide if she can trust him enough to give him her HEA.

Opinion:
I didn't like this story as much as I have the others in the series. It is pretty much all relationship-driven as Gabe tries to work out what he did wrong, and Sarah tries to forgive him. But too much of it just didn't gel for me, from Sarah being really, really hurt, and then rapidly forgiving him, to her inability or unwillingness to use her Super Senses to just work out what the heck is going on!!! And there seemed to be a big chunk of the book missing while Gabe went off to learn to be a Hunter. Is this a teaser to yet another series? Otherwise, it felt like an artificial roadblock put in the way of their happiness.

On the plus side, I loved the karaoke scene, really enjoyed visiting with past characters, and thought the trip to Disney World was a nice touch. The bdsm aspects were tastefully done and Sarah and Gabe are very sweet together.

Bell has set in motion her new "Halle Shifters" series as she introduces more shifter types into Halle. Gabe's "friend" Chloe plays a large role in Bear Necessities when her brother and cousin come to visit. It is nice to see her World developing, from coyotes in New York to Wolves in Poconos and now Bears and Foxes in Halle. It looks like an interesting, complex paranormal world. Definitely an author to keep an eye on.

Overall, this is a good paranormal series with erotic tendencies. The books are reasonably short and mostly relationship-driven, with small dramatic plots to keep the stories running. But in the end I just wasn't enamoured of this one. I wasn't sure if I really wanted Sarah to stay with Gabe, or stay quite so readily. But it is worth a read, if only to complete the Pumas series and slide into the "Halle Shifters".
