While many have heard her name, still many don't know of her longtime, prosperous friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt, or the details about her life as a young southern girl with more than a dozen brothers and sisters. Many also know there's a college in Daytona named for her, in part (Bethune-Cookman), but they don't know her relationship to the institution. This book, a comprehensive look at her life, answers many of those questions, and more. For those who already know about her life and want more depth (or even a biography written for adults, rather than the many children's books on Bethune), or for those who don't know Bethune's accomplishments, this is a godsend. It's clearly written, chocked with information, and might even be a welcome addition to many school libraries. An informational gem.

Excellent summary of cultural war

This is written from the point of view of an intellectual well versed in Western philosophy and religion but who is also well versed in American Indian Native religion. The chapters detail the stark differences between what he develops as warring cultures as he step by step describes the impact of Greek philosophy on Christian religion and how that molds the sense of individuality viewed as the modern individual in the West today. In contrast to this he describes the nature of community as seen through the eyes of natives and native religions that are land based instead of abstract conceptual systems. I find it interesting because other books such as Charles Taylor's "The Sources of the Self" make much the point he does in describing the nature of the modern individual and what brings it about. We might also see this in other books that deal with the subject. Of importance are several insightful points regarding the difficulties native communities face and how they have reacted to these culture wars. For example, regarding suicide he says, "Many people are trapped between tribal values constituting their unconscious behavioral responses and the values they have been taught in schools and churches, which primarily demand conforming to seemingly foreign ideals. Alcoholism and suicide mark this tragic fact of reservation life. People are not allowed to be Indians and cannot become whites. They have been educated, as the old-timers would say, to think with their heads instead of their hearts." (p 242) On the chapter between Natural and Hybrid Peoples he describes the Native religions as based on a sense of place - the importance of the land where "The soil you see is not ordinary soil - it is the dust of the blood, the flesh, and the bones of our ancestors. We fought and bled and died to keep other Indians from taking it, and we fought and bled and died helping the Whites. You will have to dig down through the surface before you can find nature's earth, as the upper portion is Crow." (p 148 quoting Curley, a Crow Indian Chief). (p. 247) "Education and Religion apparently do not mix."

Biting Critique of Modern Popular Christianity

This is a fascinating book. The critique of many of modern Christianity's shortcomings is accurate and relevant, though I think Mr. Deloria has a little too much fun ridiculing Christianity's efforts to make itself more relevant to modern life. Any religious thought system should be allowed to advance, and some of the things he brings up are not things to be ridiculed, but advancements to be commended.
His case for the Native American point of view, however, is very compelling. It is a philosophy that I find myself being drawn to very strongly. I have recently discovered that I have Native American blood in my veins, and have become very interested in finding out more about this part of my heritage.
The biggest two problems with this book, at least for me, are thus: 1) Mr. Delaria fails to provide those of us living in the city with any way to honor the ways of Native religion, tying it so strongly to place that those of us that can't get there are left pretty much on our own. Perhaps this is missing the point, and what he is saying is that a Native viewpoint is not compatable at all with modern city life. But if this is the point, then what hope is there of a more compassionate, earth-centered point of view taking hold? And 2), amid all of the statements that ring with truth, there are wild stories about "space astronauts" creating humans to be their slaves, and other such seeming nonsense. Delaria has many fine, valid points to make in this book, and these diversions into wild, unprobable speculation only serve to weaken his otherwise unassailable thesis.

Time and again the Native side is held out as superior, although with little actual substance as to why

I serve as the pastor of a Christian church within the Reformed tradition that has been on a Native American reservation for a bit over 100 years. I've served here three years and in that time I have continually tried to learn and understand Native American spirituality in general terms, and more specifically to answer this question: how does Native American spirituality understand and relate to God? As I have sought an answer one thing I have learned is that there does not appear to be a uniform and/or coherent understanding of Native American spirituality, either within my particular setting or more broadly through the larger Native American community. So I was excited and encouraged when I stumbled across God is Red, by Vine Deloria, who intended to present a Native view of religion.

Deloria was legendary as a voice for Native Americans, particularly as he was an academic and had both access to and credibility with the powers that be politically and culturally. Son and grandson of Episcopal priest and possessing a graduate degree from a Lutheran seminary he had at one time intended on entering vocational Christian ministry himself. With these credentials perhaps my expectations were too high, for ultimately God is Red was unable to answer those questions that I find to be fundamental for understanding Native American spirituality.

What I did learn is that Deloria appears to have an axe to grind with Christianity. He purports to present both sides of a number of spiritual issues, i.e. a Native side and a Christian side. Time and again the Native side is held out as superior, although with little actual substance as to why. And the Christian side, seen from my particular vantage point, is misrepresented. For a man of Deloria's background in Christianity, i.e. growing up in a Christian home and obtaining a graduate theological degree, he demonstrates a poor and circumscribed understanding of Christian theology and doctrine.

While he doesn't explicitly say so it would appear from his writing that he rejected Christianity as his own spiritual position. As a pastor I would love to know why that happened and to understand what he replaced it with. If he had written a spiritual memoir perhaps I would have gained the understanding I am still looking for: How do people following tradition Native practices understand and relate to God? In the end God is Red is not so much "A Native view of religion" as it is Deloria's conclusions about Christianity.

Good but not what it could be...

I consider Gary Thomas' "Sacred Marriage" to be the finest, by far, of the several dozen marriage books that I've read, as I greatly appreciate that he offers a somewhat radical and deeply profound concept of marriage as a spiritual discipline through which God primarily desires to make us holy. I am happy to recommend that book to anyone and everyone who is married, was married, will be married, might be getting married, or knows people who are married. It's that good.

And it is because of how deeply I appreciate "Sacred Marriage" that I withheld a five-star review from Thomas' follow-up, "The Joy of a Sacred Marriage." This slimmed down, excerpted, soundbite-based edition of "Sacred Marriage" was specifically created and published to be a wedding gift, presumably the sort of thing that married couples could read together on their honeymoon or over the first several weeks or months of marriage. And there's a lot of good stuff packed in there. But, much to my disappointment, for the sake of creating a little "gift book" (and probably with the unspoken motivation of offering a marriage book short enough that more men might actually read it, a necessity that ought to shame my gender), the profundity of the original "Sacred Marriage" is sliced and diced and fragmented into almost unrecognizable form. Yes, the main thesis of "Sacred Marriage" still permeates this gift book, and it surely includes some great stuff, but it's simply not as great as in its original form.

So, if this excerpted, piecemealed booklet is the only way that a couple might engage with the main ideas of "Sacred Marriage," then go for it. It would still be tremendously challenging and helpful. But I'd much more emphatically recommend that folks just read "Sacred Marriage" instead, to dig into the significance of what Thomas has to offer. Sure, beef jerky is still tasty, but wouldn't you rather enjoy a nice cut of filet mignon?

Fire is an outcast in her society, her vibrant and unnatural hair color an indicator of her monster status and her dangerous powers of mind control. She's the only one left of her kind, and she resides far out in the country where she is safe from those who fear her and would harm her.

Meanwhile, King Nash is struggling to hold on to his kingdom as enemies from the north and south threaten to overthrow him. Both Nash and his brother Brigan distrust Fire for the havoc her father wreaked on the kingdom before his death, and Brigan would like nothing more than for Fire to be killed. But now, unless they find a way to resolve their differences and work together, they'll never win the impending war.

In this prequel to Graceling, Kristin Cashore has woven an intricate and brilliant tale that reveals a whole new world beyond Katsa's seven lands, full of fantastic creatures, strange powers, and a land teeming with political tension. For the most part, the characters in Fire are made more mature than Graceling's protagonists by the complexities of their past. Fire is a strong heroine, tough and fiercely independent, but loyal and kind through and through. She is genuinely thoughtful, and her concern for others stands out, especially as she struggles to reconcile her own nature and her father's actions with who she wishes to be.

The beginning of the book is slightly slow, but in no time at all it speeds up as Fire is launched out of her comfortable world and into an unknown and dangerous one. Cashore's plot is wonderfully complex and elaborate, but tight and solid. Fire also deals with many emotions--guilt, regret, fear, love, and empathy--in a very affecting way. Cashore is a master at using all of these elements to create a suspenseful, surprising, and totally engaging read. Though Fire is not a happy, warm book all of the time--it deals with death and violence and life's cruelties, but in a sensitive and optimistic manner, it has its moments of humor and romance. Cashore's talent for pulling off such an epic and engrossing read makes her one of the best YA fantasy writers since Tamora Pierce first introduced her character Alanna to the world. If readers weren't already in love with Cashore after reading Graceling, they will be after reading Fire.

If Kristin Cashore released a book every day I'd never leave my house.

Gosh, FIRE is a fantastic. Before I read it, I would have insisted that anyone who thought FIRE was better than GRACELING had to be crazy, because how do you improve on perfection? So instead I will say that FIRE is equally good, while being a very different book.

FIRE takes place in the same world as GRACELING, but there is little crossover. It's a prequel, set at least a decade before GRACELING, and only one character appears in both books. The two can be read in any order.

The story takes place in the Dells, where there are monsters but no gracelings. Monster horses, monster mice, monster leopards, monster versions of every species - including people. The monsters are identified by their vivid coloring - "A dappled grey horse in the Dells was a horse. A sunset orange horse was a monster." - and they are so beautiful that onlookers, mesmerized, simply offer themselves up as prey. Mesmerizing beauty is a dangerous enough quality in a predatory animal - in a monster person, it is inevitably wedded to powers of mind control. Two years before FIRE begins, the Dells were nearly destroyed by a monster human, Cansrel, who used his political influence to bring the country to the brink of war.

Fire, the heroine, is Cansrel's daughter. The only living monster human in the Dells, at seventeen she is burdened by a terrible fear that she is evil like her father, and profound guilt because of his misdeeds. She hides her beauty, which drives other humans insane with desire, lives in an isolated corner of the kingdom, and uses her powers of mind-control as rarely as possible. Fire's closest friend and sometime lover, Archer, thinks she is only safe when alone in a room, behind stone walls. But Fire doesn't think that's much of a life, and when Prince Brigan arrives at her homestead with a request for aid, Fire agrees to journey to the capital to interview a spy caught in the palace. Brigan is deeply suspicious of Fire - he knew Cansrel, and is sure the apple cannot have fallen far from the tree - and Fire soon discovers that any aid she might offer to the King will probably violate the careful ethics she has cultivated her whole life. To do good, she must do harm.

It's a complicated, layered plot and I won't say any more about it. The characters are amazing, in their complexity and intensity and believability, and the writing is gorgeous. FIRE (and GRACELING) are fantastic books - they will satisfy young readers and adult readers alike, they will satisfy picky readers and readers just looking to be swept away into a marvelous fantasy. They will satisfy readers who like adventure, intrigue, and romance. The characters - even the villains - are interesting, intelligent people; and the twists and turns of the plot are unpredictable.

Highly, highly recommended - read this book!
