About the Author
A sought-after speaker on women in the military and a respected advocate for their cause, Kirsten Holmstedt has testified before Congress and appeared on PBS's NewsHour, BBC's The World, and C-SPAN, as well as local TV and radio programs across the country. Her previous book, Band of Sisters (978-0-8117-3566-7), received the American Authors Association's Golden Quill Award and the Military Writers Society of America's Founder's Award. Girls? And that's how they appear

Having served in Iraq as a female military member, I cringed when I read this book. After I cringed, I was annoyed. After I was annoyed, I wondered, "Hmmm, did the author get on Oprah like she so very much intended?"

Far from giving an account of how women were "warriors" in Iraq, the author presents the women as weak, victimized, traumatized, and unable to function as well as their male counterparts. I suppose the intent is for us to feel sorry for these "girls", note their vulnerability and pity them for their drama.

Though I don't mean to downplay the negative effects that hanging out in a combat zone can have on anyone, regardless of gender, the author did an incredible disservice to women. The word "girls" in the title should be the first hint at how the author views these soldiers, Marines, airmen and sailors: As little girls for whom we should feel sad.

The women I know from Iraq -- warriors -- groan that this book perpetuates an image of weak overly sensitive nurturing women scarred by combat.

Next book -- though I hope there isn't one -- it might be nice if the author at least gives the subjects the title of "women" instead of girls, and relates what makes them "warriors" instead of victims to be pitied.

This is an unfortuante book that is not an accurate cross-section or sample of women who served in Iraq.

great subject matter, distractingly poor writing

This book was so poorly written I just could not finish it. The stories themselves are interesting: there were some deeply flawed individuals profiled in this book which I appreciate because I think too many civilians put military members on a pedestal (we're all human); there were some honorable, selfless, heroic women profiled as well. But the writing! I found myself re-reading the same paragraphs over and over again before I gave up in frustration. There were too many confusing sentences, non sequential story lines, horrible segues, talking about people by name before they were introduced....such a shame. The author did not do these servicewomen justice.

Joys and sorrow of coming home

I happened to receive a copy of this book "fresh off the press" almost 48 hours ago. This is an outstanding book! It tells the stories of a dozen or more women serving in the U.S. military and what their experience was of coming home from war.

A few of the stories recount transitions that, relative to most of the stories, were triumphantly smooth. Most of the stories, though, tell of pain, sadness, frustration and obstacles of many kinds that complicate the process of adjusting to life outside the combat zone. I was educated about and astounded by how difficult it is for a vet to get medical attention. I had no idea how gruelling was the process of shifting one's identity from first sergeant to full-time mother.

Even those stories, however, end on notes that are to various degrees uplifting. The never-say-die spirit that the women in this book display triumphs in the end in almost all cases.

I read and enjoyed author Kirsten Holmstedt's "Band of Sisters." This is a perfect hand-in-glove partner to that book. I can imagine the two books sold as a set, in a nice slipcase! I encountered a few passages in "Marching Home" that need a bit more precision in description or narration. But apart from those moments, the writing is clean, cogent and coherent.

In "Marching Home," Ms. Holmstedt does a superb job of differentiating these soldiers, Marines, sailors, "Coasties" and USAF specialists from one another--both in terms of military duties and wartime experiences, the different cultures of their branches of service, and most of all, their personalities. One can keep the people and the stories straight from one another--they do not seem like one story repeated a dozen times.

The photos and the writing introduce us to a group of women who are smart, witty, bold, indomitable...beautiful Americans inside and out, filled with heart. I think Ms. Holmstedt must be the same kind of person--in the final chapter she recounts her own fight against secondary trauma...which is the tendency to absorb and gradually exhibit in one's own mind and actions the feelings, perceptions, fears and isolation that trauma survivors report. Counselors, relatives and close friends of combat veterans, who love and support those veterans, often experience secondary trauma ... as Ms. Holmstedt did after months of compassionately and empathically listening to the stories of the women in the book.

All of this is epic stuff. Earlier today, after having just finished the book, I noticed myself looking at young women I saw at the gas station and supermarket, and wondering, "Is she a combat vet? She COULD be." How many of us did that before the publication of "Band of Sisters" and, now, "The Girls Come Marching Home"? Ms. Holmstedt's books are incrementally transitioning us as Americans into people who routinely and without surprise see women as fighters for our country...thereby adding another nuance to what Shakespeare called woman's "infinite variety."

A Spooky Shocker Classic

Why am I giving this book 5 stars when the writing isn't especially great? Because Ira Levin hit every right note in "Rosemary's Baby" and made it into an instantaneous horror classic. On one level, it's a great horror story; on another, it's also a kind of morality play: God has a son; what happens when the devil gets jealous and wants one too?

Enter Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse, almost-newlyweds, new tenants in an old, luxury building called "The Bramford", famous for its high ceilings and working fireplaces, notorious for its unsavory happenings (dead baby wrapped in newspapers abandoned in the basement). They are warned off by Hutch, an old friend of Rosemary's who knows all about the building's sordid history, but disregard the omens.

Rosemary is a housewife (yes, back in the day there actually were such things) who wants to be a mother. Guy is an actor and a rising star whose talent is overshadowed only by his unlimited ambition. Next door are the Castevets, Minnie and Roman, a delightfully ditzy old couple who just happen to head a coven of witches who have made a pact with the devil. Rosemary wants a baby; Guy wants a leading part in a hit play; the witches want... well, all the ingredients are there for a devil's brew that sets the pot boiling wonderfully for 260 pages.

After a nightmarish impregnation, Rosemary goes through a hellacious pregnancy, presided over by Dr. Sapirstein, a famous "society" obstetrician who assures Rosemary that her pains will go away in a day or two. Hutch's death after a long, suspicious illness jolts Rosemary out of her cocoon of trusting ignorance, and here Levin builds the horror up ever so insidiously until it hits you like a sledgehammer. Rosemary discovers who her neighbors are; that they have drawn her husband into a diabolical plot, and when she runs to Dr. Sapirstein for protection, she finds out that he too is... well, if you can't trust your husband and your obstetrician, who can you trust? Rosemary is left alone to try to save her baby from what she fears is a plot against his life and safety, remembering that dead baby in the basement; there's a plot afoot, all right, but what it is, is something neither Rosemary or the reader could possibly imagine until they stare at it, literally and figuratively, in the eyes.

Levin is one terrific storyteller and he manages to time the action to coincide perfectly with the story line; Rosemary conceives, ironically, on the night of the Pope's visit to New York in early October, and the baby is born, fittingly, right after midnight, "exactly half the year around from you-know". Some readers have complained that the ending is lame after all the shock and horror, and they have a point, but it's fun to wonder, how else could Levin have ended this story? It's a perfect psychological horror fantasy, no blood, no gore, no things that go bump in the night, but just the ordinary neighbors next door that can and do raise all kinds of hell. It's a classic that has stood the test of time; after 35 years, it's still a great read.

Masterpiece - Plain and Simple

I have been on an Ira Levin marathon since reading the sequel to this book. So, I went back and read R's Baby after not having read it in thirty years. It is such an amazing book on so many levels it's hard to talk about. Everything, description, dialogue, characters, setting, and most of all plot, mesh seamlessly in one of the great reads of all time. If you've never read it you are in for a treat. As a side note, the film version by Roman Polanski is also a masterpiece. It is the best adaptation of book to film ever done. The reason for this is simple: It IS the book. Polanski didn't know he could change anything so 95% of the dialogue is taken verbatim from the book and the other five percent is paraphrased. It helps that Levin writes the best dialogue of anyone writing fiction today. But the more amazing thing is, that visual touches that I've been ascribing to Polanski all these years are ALSO right out of the book, as are several costume descriptions. Were it only that more movie adaptations were this faithful and we weren't subjected to baboon screenwriters' "fixing" of novels. For the clearest example of horrifying adaptation, one only need turn to Mr. Joe Estherhaz' adaptation of Ira Levin's Sliver

Spooky and Well-Crafted

Ira Levin's novel is utterly fascinating. For one, the best element is that the horror and suspense all come from seemingly normal, everyday things. A world where the bad guys are the quirky next door neighbors is a lot scarier than one where the ridiculous horned monsters are the bad guys. Two, his dialogue is sparkling. It's as if all of the characters are real flesh and blood, the way that they speak so realistically. Three, I found it very interesting that Levin approached writing it not by using big words and long, complicated descriptions. His sentances are short, precise, and sweet. It makes a nice "relaxing" read. Also, the movie adaption is one of the best films ever made and is brimming with excellent performances. Read it and see the movie. I totally agree with the reader who commented on the movie being the best adaption of a book to film.

About the Author
Ellen Raskin was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and grew up during the Great Depression. She was the author of several novels, including the Newbery Medal-winning The Westing Game, the Newbery Honor-winning Figgs & Phantoms, The Tattooed Potato and other clues, and The Mysterious Disappearance of Leon (I Mean Noel). She also wrote and illustrated many picture books and was an accomplished graphic artist. She designed dust jackets for dozens of books, including the first edition of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic A Wrinkle in Time. Ms. Raskin died at the age of fifty-six on August 8, 1984, in New York City.

INTRODUCTION

Until 1970, Ellen Raskin was considered an illustrator, not an author, although she had written the texts of her notable picture books, such as Nothing Ever Happens on My Block; And It Rained; and Spectacles. And until 1969, I didn’t really know her, although when I was the children’s-book editor at Holt, Rinehart and Winston, she had illustrated Books: A Book to Begin On, by Susan Bartlett, and Come Along!, by Rebecca Caudill—as well as doing for us some of the one thousand book jackets of which she was so proud.

Our friendship really began in the smoking car (like the title character of Moe Q. McGlutch, Ellen smoked too much) of a Pennsylvania Railroad train en route from New York to Philadelphia, where we were both speaking on a panel. I stopped to say hello, and she said, “I’m sitting here alone because I’m so nervous. I hate speaking.” “I hate it, too,” I said, “and I’ve given up smoking.” In the depressed gloom that followed this exchange, the beginning of a bond was formed.

That same year I moved from Holt to E. P. Dutton. Their office was located at Union Square and Seventeenth Street, only a short walk from Ellen’s apartment on Eighth Street, and we got together more often. One day, Ellen confided that she had always wanted to adapt Goblin Market, by Christina Rossetti, as a picture-book text. I thought of the lavishly rich visual details of the poem, and I longed to see how she would illustrate it. ”Would you do the book for me?” I asked. “Yes,” she answered. “Jean [Jean Karl, her editor at Atheneum] doesn’t want it.” Ellen was always candid. So she did do it—her first book for Dutton. One of her exquisitely intricate paintings for that book now hangs on my wall.

We often talked about our lives, and I particularly loved stories about her family and how she and her parents and sister drove around the country during the Great Depression so her father could look for work, an epic safari that took them from Milwaukee to California. “You should write a book about growing up in the Depression,” I told her.

Great Book!

I absolutely loved the book. Before I got the book, I was wondering if it was one of those scary murder mystery books. It didn't seem scary according to the reviews. I looked at some of the reviews, and some said the book was great, some said that it involved too many characters. I thought it wouldn't hurt to try it. It was a little confusing in the beginning, but at the end, everything comes together like a puzzle. I would recommend this book to people all ages. Thank you for an amazing book, Ellen Raskin!

A childhood favorite that still works for me decades later

One of my favorite childhood books, I remember reading this in elementary school as part of our assigned readings. I like mystery novels with a wide cast of characters, each of whom has his or her own narrative, as opposed to the mystery series that focus only on the detective's perspective. This way, you get to familiarize yourself with a range of personalities and characters (you can't get much more varied than this cast) while uncovering smaller mysteries (like who's the bomber?) along the way.

Highly recommended for readers of any and all ages - I can sincerely say that as an adult, I prefer reading this book to the hundreds of crap mystery novels that are more "popular."

Clever puzzle with deep insights

This book has amazing twists and an emotionally powerful ending. It does require you to suspend disbelief (some of the events that occur are not completely realistic). The Westing Game sharply examines racism, ableism, sexism, classism without being preachy. It can be quite acerbically funny, witty and clever. It may require some re-reads to understand it completely. I read the Mark Reads website commentary on this book, which greatly helped me understand the book. The puzzles are based on logic and are very well constructed. The Westing Game can be frightening and suspenseful. The characters are flawed, and have their good points. Worth reading if you love logic puzzles, chilling mysteries and for the beautiful and emotional ending,

Beautiful Afghan

This is the afghan I chose to make for my new grand daughter. Her nursery is going to be a butterfly theme. This afghan was easier than I thought to make. There were a few problems with the border, but I made a different one than in the instructions as to the last row. I also made a chain for the body instead of just wrapping it around the butterfly and I attached the antenae to the afghan so it would just not flop around.

Very beautiful pattern.
