Nice pictures, but....

The artwork of the reptiles, snakes and other animals is very well-done. There is nice data about the animals on the pages. However, I agree with the review above: the people who wrote the in-depth stories and fictitious predatory details on the animals are certifiable ghouls. Way too many entries on people being attacked and suffering either gruesome injuries or horrible deaths. My personal "favorite" was the one on the American alligator - the look on the dog's face as it is grabbed from the path and dragged into the water by the beast in a bloody trail of death was really....er....eye-catching?

Not a good choice

One of my students brought this book to my reptile education class. After looking up one of my animals in the book the children were, for the first time ever, apprehensive about meeting one of my reptiles. The animal? A Mata mata turtle which eats only fish and has no teeth. It physically cannot hurt anyone. Also included in the "scariest creatures on Earth" are the Pipa toad (again, no teeth) and the green Anole, a lizard no more than a few inches long that children love to catch. Why is this book promoting terror of creatures that in no way deserve it?
I whole-heartedly agree with the other reviewers that this book unjustly demonizes reptiles and amphibians using skewed facts, misleading illustrations (not real photos), and gruesome fabricated stories of animal attacks. The only good this I can say about this book is that it will make an excellent talking point for my anti-bullying demonstration using the same reptiles it demeans within it's pages.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK

This book is full of grossly exaggerated and frequently incorrect information, including graphic details of bloody and gory incidents. It will undoubtedly inspire an inappropriate fear in ordinary children of creatures that should be admired and respected. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.
Here is an example of the nauseating story-telling: "Racked with pain as the terrible venom eats away at his flesh, the fisherman casts off. As he drifts out to sea he cuts the bite wounds and tries to suck out the venom, but soon collapses into unconsciousness. He bleeds to death long before anyone spots his boat, and is found sprawled in a pool of his own blood." This fictitious incident involving a Fer-de-lance snake is the stuff of children's nightmares. In reality, the Fer-de-lance is a reclusive creature that plays an important role in its natural environment, and we can learn much good by studying it rather than abhorring it.
