Outdated and Uninspiring

I expected the book to be outdated, but full of classics. It is, in my opinion, outdated, but not full of classics! I started first with the chapter on informal dining, and was really disappointed. I am NOT a novice cook, I've eaten in amazing restaurants on 5 continents, and I frequently throw multi-course dinner parties (formal and casual), but nothing in here really appealed to me. In the "informal dinners" chapter, I saw lobster, crab, glazed duck, poached pears, etc. Granted, you can make some of these casual by having a lobster bake or backyard grill party, but nothing about these preparations was informal. And, most of the recipes were dated and not appealing to today's tastes. I love poached pears (I poach mine in reisling and serve with a cardamom cream), but this recipe serves them over rice. What?!? Doesn't even sound good! But, the book was originally published before I was born, so maybe this type of food doesn't appeal to me? I don't think I'll be keeping this on my iPad. Can't see me even referencing it for ideas.

Great menu plans from the master chef of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Some of the menus suggestions are a little dated but even at that it's interesting to see the evolution of our eating trends. The recipes are classic and I loved hearing from James Beard again.

If you have a pantry to match the Hollywood crowd, then the recipes in this book suit you. I'm an unfortunately blue collar guy and can only use a small portion of them in my simplistic world. But thanks, anyway
