Yes, it's funny.

I am listening to this book now, and I realize that I am a little premature in this review. I am enjoying the book, the author has a very interesting and funny way of explaining history by referring to it in a modern way. It's very charming.

However, this is a review of the audiobook, and I'm sorry, but I don't appreciate the author's narration. Sometimes, when I hear authors read their own material, like Jimmy Carter, or Nora Ephron, they do a very passable job. I do not care for Susan Vowell's voice, which is squeeky and lispy. I'm sure it is a nice voice for conversation, but to just listen to it go on and on is too much. Her sense of timing is wrong, too. She reads too fast most of the time, and I had trouble with not having enough time to let the facts sink in. There are also other voices that pipe in now and then, too, which I find very annoying. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme nor reason to when they chime in - it isn't just direct quotes, or anything like that.

I did not care for the production of this audiobook. The book itself was, as I said, funny - but I'm not sure how much I will retain from it. It seems to jump around too much, it is not linear, but more character based.

Excellent, informative, and fun

Sarah Vowell has an uncanny ability to tightly weave early history with present day conditions and issues including the genealogy of recent politicians to those who landed here in the 1600's. Her humor and personal perspective create a sense of hope knowing that there are those learned folks paying close attention to our behavior as a nation. Her love of history is equal to her depth of knowledge about it. In high school and college often times history was dry, date-driven, and power important. The human side, what drives individuals to greatness or the lack thereof is always far more interesting and Sarah grasps that understanding of human nature and our sometimes mis-guided religious pursuits. I also enjoyed her Partly Cloudy Patriot.

Vocal very well done. This worked well on a day trip. Others by the same author are also good. I would buy more.
