Good, But Too Sad to Endure For Long

This books deserves the press it got, but 2/3rds of the way through, I really wanted it to end. It was depressing. And you can only do depressing so long, before you tire of it. Since this was a memoir, the author could not manipulate the truth to serve his plotting, though, he was accused by people who knew him as a child of embellishing this story. I think he probably told it like he remembered it, and his experiences with a drunken father weren't unbelievable or even out of the ordinary. Many people went through what his mother went through. Prohibition was fueled by irate wives and mothers who starved while their worthless men drank their wages away. The Catholic Church made a pretty poor showing in this book. Only one member of the clergy ever comforted Frank McCourt. Being a Catholic myself, I think this sadly too true to life.

An Irish Tale of Woe!

McCourt's story was very well written.
The setting was Ireland and he brought the flavor
of the Emerald Isle along with all its greenery to a bigger than life status!
So much of the book was depressing yet he intermingled comedic parts throughout to keep it balanced and exciting!
The reader was shown the perils of poverty and all its brutal effects on a family: the father, mother, children and relatives.
In most cases it brought out the worst of people but some characters showed strength and resilience beyond imagination!
The ending provided no resolutions and left you with a grave feeling of despair and uncertainty!
It was a sad tale of woe which makes one wonder if any of us could ever endure what Frank and his family did and live to actually write about it?

Summer Reading

We paid full price for this. My son is reading it for school as a summer reading assignment. It's an excellent book and this seller shipped faster than expected. The book was in great condition. Highly recommended.
