If only the heroine would throw a punch ...

at the hero's face.
My complaint about this book is solely in the main character.
And let me add, I love this author. I love her other books. I've read everything she's written thus far, and pre-ordered her upcoming books. Can't get enough of her.
Oh, but this book ... grates on my nerves. Makes my teeth itch. Seriously irks me. And I love a dominant man story. But this guy. Everytime he speaks, a voice in my head grows louder through the book, shrieking, "Punch him in the head, punch him in the head, punch him in the head!"
I cannot reconcile him as a hero. The way he treats the heroine, his attitude toward her, all of it. I'm not against some BDSM in a story, in the bedroom, if it's between consenting adults. Treating the heroine like a bad dog who is supposed to obey as they wander through Disney land, as she visits with a friend at a wedding, as she goes on a date with another man? Nope. I'm not against some serious alpha male. Questionable consent, using his size and strength against her? Nope. Not a hero. Not this guy.
Not that those things can't work in a story, if it's set up that way. But in this author's world, it's really not. And since the hero is the sheriff of this small town, he should probably know better than to be doing what he's doing. A good punch in the face would be an excellent place to start his education, in my opinion.
If the bad guy had won, taken the girl and run off into the sunset, at the end, I would have given this review five stars, just because I hated the hero that much.
So, just to wrap up my angst against this book, I really don't recommend it. But try DMB's other books. They are well written, with great stories and characters that you'll be eager to see more of. These characters from this hideous story actually appear in other stories, and they don't annoy in those.

Hated, hated, hated this story!

Gabe wasn't a dominant, he was just a jerk. Seriously, folks, this man/cat doesn't have enough will or juice to tell his new boss where to stuff it, but he has enough to dominate Sarah? There is a word for those who can't stand up for themselves in their professional lives and so come home to stomp all over those at home, and that word IS NOT "romantic" or "charming" or even "desirable."
His domination was supposed to be all for her pleasure, but where is his consideration for her pleasure, her heart, her feelings, her peace of mind, ANY OTHER TIME?!? He was going to make this decision, but he didn't even really consult Sarah. While he is gone, he sounds off over the limited communication time he has to another woman. He comes back and expects her to fall into his arms in a very, "where's my supper, wench," sort of way. He gets jealous, but doesn't understand that she might be have feelings, too, like, say, jealousy over the other woman he has talked to more than he talked to her. Disregards her in decision-making, controlling, displays a complete lack of understanding of her feelings...hmm, still not spelling "good husband material" to me.
Warning lights are flashing everywhere for me, but, as usual for paranormal fiction, the "destined mate" card trumps all, so we are supposed to buy their HEA? Not me! I am sensing nothing but a restraining order, and since he is the sheriff, Sarah might be fleeing to Petal, Georgia and the arms of one of Lauren Dane's Chase brothers. She'd be a lot safer. If I could give this negative stars, I would.

Can she open herself to the hurt, in order to find the love?

Book 5 of Bell's "Halle Pumas" series. Preceded by Steel Beauty. No further books at this time.
Books 4 and 5 are available as a paperback anthology Animal Attraction.
Plot:
Now that Gabe has returned to town, Sarah needs to decide if she can trust him enough to give him her HEA.
Comments:
- Contemporary paranormal (shape shifting) SmallTown romance with explicit bedroom scenes.
- 2272 kindle locations, 30,000 words, but finishes around 1940 locations.
- m/f - explicit, reasonably frequent. Light bdsm including D/s, bondage, spanking.
- Sarah has made cameo appearances in previous books. Gabe has also played roles as the town Sheriff and Adrian's Second. Events that occurred in Book 3, during Sheri's troubles, are referenced and affect The Senate's choice of Gabe as a Hunter.
- "Only in my Dreams" starts within days of the destruction of the rogue wolves in Book 3.
- Includes excerpts from Cabin Fever by Alisha Rai, Dance on the Wilde Side by Beverly Rae, and Very Much Alive by Dana Marie Bell.
Opinion:
I didn't like this story as much as I have the others in the series. It is pretty much all relationship-driven as Gabe tries to work out what he did wrong, and Sarah tries to forgive him. But too much of it just didn't gel for me, from Sarah being really, really hurt, and then rapidly forgiving him, to her inability or unwillingness to use her Super Senses to just work out what the heck is going on!!! And there seemed to be a big chunk of the book missing while Gabe went off to learn to be a Hunter. Is this a teaser to yet another series? Otherwise, it felt like an artificial roadblock put in the way of their happiness.
On the plus side, I loved the karaoke scene, really enjoyed visiting with past characters, and thought the trip to Disney World was a nice touch. The bdsm aspects were tastefully done and Sarah and Gabe are very sweet together.
Bell has set in motion her new "Halle Shifters" series as she introduces more shifter types into Halle. Gabe's "friend" Chloe plays a large role in Bear Necessities when her brother and cousin come to visit. It is nice to see her World developing, from coyotes in New York to Wolves in Poconos and now Bears and Foxes in Halle. It looks like an interesting, complex paranormal world. Definitely an author to keep an eye on.
Overall, this is a good paranormal series with erotic tendencies. The books are reasonably short and mostly relationship-driven, with small dramatic plots to keep the stories running. But in the end I just wasn't enamoured of this one. I wasn't sure if I really wanted Sarah to stay with Gabe, or stay quite so readily. But it is worth a read, if only to complete the Pumas series and slide into the "Halle Shifters".
